Can You Drift at Okayama International Circuit? (2026)
The Rundown
- No. Okayama International Circuit (Okayama) sells no drift session. Every four-wheel slot on its own timetable is 4S, 4V, FS or KS, and the single drift entry on the circuit's 2026 calendar is the Formula Drift Japan finale of 2–4 October 2026, which you attend as a spectator.
- What a private driver can buy is a 30-minute grip slot at ¥6,600 on a weekday or ¥7,150 at a weekend, and that price assumes club membership, which costs ¥30,250 to ¥48,400 for the first year depending on the month you join.
- The licence-free door, Weekday Powers, publishes neither its course nor its fee. Both entries read 'varies by the event, please check each date' (checked 19 September 2026). It is booked by telephone only, and the kit list includes a personal seal and a Japanese health insurance card.
- There is no written track ban. Across 4 official documents we read on 19 September 2026, the word ドリフト appears exactly once, in the visitor conduct rules, prohibiting it on paved surfaces and internal roads alongside bonfires and barbecues. The four-wheel running regulations and the club rules never mention it.
- The cheapest lap of the GP circuit an ordinary visitor can buy is ¥1,100 for two laps behind a pace car, plus ¥1,200 admission, signed up at the office on the day because no advance telephone booking is taken.

Drifting at Okayama International Circuit at a glance — verified 19 September 2026
No, you cannot drift at Okayama International Circuit (Okayama), and the reason is not a rule. The 3,703 m GP circuit in Mimasaka simply never puts a drift session on sale: its four-wheel timetable runs four classes, 4S, 4V, FS and KS, and the only drift entry anywhere on its 2026 calendar is the Formula Drift Japan season finale of 2 to 4 October 2026, which you watch from a grandstand on a ¥3,800 advance ticket. Every figure, rule and date below was checked on the official Okayama International Circuit and Formula Drift Japan pages on 19 September 2026.
This is the circuit that held the Formula 1 Pacific Grand Prix, won by Michael Schumacher in 1994 and again in 1995, back when it was called TI Circuit Aida. Thirteen corners, two straights, and a qualifying record of 1:10.218 that the circuit says Ayrton Senna set there in 1994 and nobody has beaten since. It is a serious venue. It is just not your drift venue.
What does Okayama International Circuit actually sell a four-wheel driver?
Four classes, and the interesting one is the slowest.
| Class | What it is | Can you drift in it? |
|---|---|---|
| 4S | Four-wheel touring car slot on the GP circuit, competition cars and road-registered cars together | No. Grip running only |
| 4V | The beginners’ slot. 「2分10秒より速い車両はNG」: cars quicker than 2 min 10 sec are not allowed | No. It is a speed-limited grip slot |
| FS | Formula cars, F4, Super FJ, FR, GRANZ, VITA | No |
| KS | Super karts | No |
| Weekday Powers | Monthly licence-free run day for road-registered cars, booked by telephone | Not sold as drift running |
The 4V class is the one an ordinary visitor would land in, and it tells you what kind of place this is. It accepts RVs, minivans, hybrids and kei cars, it lets you run the full international racing course with no pace car, and it enforces a minimum lap time: run quicker than 2 minutes 10 seconds and you are shown a black flag and asked to slow down. The four-wheel running regulations add one line that rules out the other thing visitors ask for: 「スポーツ走行枠での同乗走行は出来ません」, no passengers in a sports-running slot.
There is one door that needs no membership, no licence and no lap time. The experience run is ¥1,100 including tax for two laps of the GP circuit in your own car, or ¥4,400 for a coach, with admission of ¥1,200 per person on top. A pace car leads throughout, overtaking is forbidden, helmet and gloves are not required in a passenger car, and you may carry passengers up to the seating capacity. No advance telephone booking is taken at all: you walk to the OIRC office beside the tyre service and ask which slots are free that day.
What does it cost to buy a real session, and who is allowed to?
The fee table is short. The membership table underneath it is the real price.
| What you buy | Weekday | Weekend or public holiday |
|---|---|---|
| Four-wheel sports running, 30 minutes | ¥6,600 | ¥7,150 |
| Karts, 30 minutes | ¥4,840 | ¥5,500 |
| Running an unreserved slot | add ¥1,100 per slot | add ¥1,100 per slot |
| Experience run, 2 laps behind a pace car | ¥1,100 plus ¥1,200 admission | by enquiry |
Those session prices are club rates, and the club is priced by the month you join, because every licence expires at the end of the following January.
| Membership (2026 licence year) | Jan–Mar | Apr–Jun | Jul–Sep | Oct–Dec |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| OIRC, full sports running | ¥48,400 | ¥43,560 | ¥38,720 | ¥30,250 |
| OIRC, Lady’s or Teens | ¥36,300 | ¥31,460 | ¥26,620 | ¥24,200 |
| 4V Club, 4V slot only | ¥24,200 | ¥24,200 | ¥24,200 | ¥24,200 |
Joining OIRC means sitting a licence course in person, held on most days, with an application form, a passport-sized photo, your driving licence, and a car and kit for the practical session. One detail is worth knowing before you plan a solo trip: the timetable page asks every runner to bring a companion, who gets free admission, and to carry a health insurance card.
The membership does buy something beyond this circuit. Since 16 June 2014, OIRC, Sportsland SUGO and Autopolis have run a shared licence, which is why Sportsland SUGO charges an Okayama licence holder ¥7,200 for a session instead of the ¥12,000 a visitor pays.
Is drifting actually banned at Okayama International Circuit?
Almost, but not where you would think, and the distinction is worth getting right.
We read the four-wheel running regulations, the four-wheel manners guide, the OIRC club rules and every sports-running page. None of them mentions drifting. The word ドリフト appears exactly once on the whole site, in 「ご来場のお客様へ」, the conduct rules for visitors, which prohibit 「舗装路面・通路でのドリフト等の危険走行」, dangerous driving such as drifting on paved surfaces and passageways. That sentence sits in a list with bonfires, barbecues and tent pegs that damage the tarmac. It is a paddock and car park rule, not a track rule.
So the honest position is the same one we found at Suzuka Circuit in Mie: no written ban on drifting the circuit, and no drift product either. The answer comes from what is and is not on sale.
What Weekday Powers asks you to bring, and does not tell you in advance
- Fee: 「開催内容により変わります。各開催日にてご確認ください」. Not published. Same wording for which course you run
- Booking: telephone only, on 0868-74-3311. No web form and no email route
- Car: road-legal, with a valid vehicle inspection certificate
- Kit: helmet, gloves, long sleeves, long trousers, sports shoes, and tape for the lights
- Paperwork: a driving licence, a health insurance card (a copy is accepted), and an inkan, the carved personal seal Japan uses in place of a signature
How do you reach Mimasaka without a car?
This is the part that decides whether the finale weekend works for you. The address is 1210 Takinomiya, Mimasaka, Okayama 701-2612, and the aerial photograph at the top of this page is the honest answer: forested hills in every direction and no town at the gate.
The circuit publishes a route, and it does not end at a station. From JR Okayama Station you take an Uno Bus towards Yunogo Onsen or Hayashino Station, ride about 60 minutes, get off at a village stop called Fukumoto, and take a taxi for roughly 20 minutes. From Osaka the published chain is longer still: a JR Bus or Shinki Bus highway coach towards Tsuyama, off at Mimasaka IC, a taxi to Hayashino Station, then that same Uno Bus. By car it is about 25 km and 30 minutes from Bizen IC, Wake IC or Mimasaka IC, and about 60 minutes from Okayama Airport.
Two official pages, two different answers about the nearest station
The access page routes you via Okayama Station and Fukumoto and lists JR Yoshinaga as "about 20 minutes by car". The circuit's spectator FAQ instead calls JR Yoshinaga 「最寄」, the nearest station, because a shuttle bus runs from there for the four big meetings of the year, which it names as SUPER GT, Super Formula, Super Taikyu and Superbike, and it warns the shuttle may not run depending on the event. Formula Drift Japan is not one of those four, and nothing on either page says a shuttle is scheduled for 2 to 4 October 2026. We are not resolving that for you by guessing: both sentences are official and they point at different stations.
The step that stops people: the last 20 minutes to the gate have no timetable
The circuit's own access page ends the public-transport route at a village bus stop and then says "taxi, about 20 minutes". It gives no operator, no number and no times, in either direction, and the station shuttle it does run is named for four other events. That final leg is a telephone call in Japanese, twice, and it has to be settled before you land rather than on the morning. Send us your travel window and we will make those calls, hold the car at both ends of the day and travel with you: race weekends and drift days in Japan, with the venue confirmed and the last leg from the station handled.
The finale weekend: which of the three days do you buy?
The 2026 Formula Drift Japan season ends here, billed as Valenti presents MOTOR GAMES, carrying G-SHOCK presents 2026 FORMULA DRIFT JAPAN Round 6 and YOKOHAMA presents 2026 FDJ2 Round 6.
| Day | What runs | Ticket |
|---|---|---|
| Friday 2 October 2026 | FDJ2 Round 6 | ¥3,800 advance, ¥5,000 on the day |
| Saturday 3 October 2026 | FDJ2 Round 6 and FDJ Round 6, both classes | ¥3,800 advance, ¥5,000 on the day |
| Sunday 4 October 2026 | FDJ Round 6 | ¥3,800 advance, ¥5,000 on the day |
Read the ticket rule carefully, because it is the one that costs people money. Every ticket, advance or same-day, is a single-day ticket valid on any one of the three days, so two days means two tickets. Parking works the same way: ¥1,650 for a car and ¥1,100 for a motorcycle, sold on the day only, one per day. Anyone of junior high school age and above needs a ticket and elementary school age and under go free. Advance tickets are sold through Seven Ticket, CN Playguide and Lawson online, and over the counter at Seven-Eleven, FamilyMart and Lawson terminals, with a ¥165 issuing fee at the machines that charge one. If you want one day and one day only, Saturday is the day both championships are on track. Other national dates sit in our event and track calendar.
So where do you actually drift near Okayama?
In the same prefecture, at two much smaller circuits.
| Venue | Drift running for the public? | Published price |
|---|---|---|
| Okayama International Circuit, Mimasaka | No. Grip, formula and kart slots only | ¥6,600 per 30-minute weekday slot, plus membership from ¥24,200 |
| Nakayama Circuit, Wake | Yes, on its own Grip and Drift days: 12 Oct and 3 Nov 2026 | ¥12,000 for a full day per car |
| Bihoku Highland Circuit, Niimi | Yes, ordinary free running on any open day | ¥5,500 all in, A course plus admission |
Nakayama Circuit is the neat one, because it sits at Wake IC, one of the three motorway exits Okayama International names on its own access page, roughly half an hour away by road. Its Grip and Drift day splits entrants into a grip group and a drift group, costs ¥12,000 for the full day, ¥10,000 from 13:00 and ¥7,000 with the circuit licence, and two dates remain this year: Monday 12 October and Tuesday 3 November 2026, each 9:00 to 16:30. Bihoku Highland is further west in Niimi and is the region’s only everyday drift venue, at ¥5,000 on the 710 m A course plus ¥500 admission, with bookings taken by telephone and fax alone. Our Chugoku tracks guide compares all five venues in the region, and every circuit we have verified is in the track directory.
Treat Okayama International as what it is. Buy the Saturday ticket, watch a championship decided, and drive somewhere smaller the day before.

The alternative it lists from Osaka is a highway bus towards Tsuyama, alighting at Mimasaka IC, a taxi to Hayashino Station and the same Uno Bus to Fukumoto. The circuit also states that it runs a shuttle bus from JR Yoshinaga Station for its four big race meetings of the year, naming SUPER GT, Super Formula, Super Taikyu and Superbike, and adds that it may not run depending on the event.
