Can a tourist drive a drift car in Japan, and which licence do I need?

Yes. To drive on public roads Japan accepts your home licence plus a 1949 Geneva Convention International Driving Permit issued before you fly (six countries need a Japanese translation instead). On a circuit the venue sets the rule: some rental operators ask for an IDP, Minami Chiba Circuit's rental drift session needs no licence at all, and YZ Circuit near Nagoya confirmed to us that a visitor needs neither a Japanese licence nor an IDP for its free-run slots.

How much does one day of drifting in Japan cost, all in?

Watching starts at ¥500 and a passenger ride at ¥500, but driving is where the money is. A rented car day starts around ¥83,000 (an insured, shared school session) or ¥130,000 for a car to yourself with tuition, four tyres and fuel included. In your own car the ¥8,500 Ebisu track fee is the small line: four new drift tyres cost ¥47,600 on top, before fuel or transport.

Is there any calendar of drift events in Japan?

Yes. TSUISO's Drift Japan Event & Track Calendar at /calendar/ lists every confirmed competition, matsuri and organiser day with its fee and the date its entry window shuts, and the same list is a subscribable .ics feed at /calendar.ics. Big series fix dates a year out; grassroots days appear only two to four weeks ahead, so re-check before you fly.

Is there a drift weekend I can do near Tokyo?

Yes, but Tokyo itself has no drift circuit, so the weekend is a train or a car out: Mobara Twin Circuit in Chiba (45 minutes by JR plus a bus) runs scheduled drift days on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays at ¥15,000 booked ahead; Nikko in Tochigi runs organiser days at ¥12,000–16,500; Minami Chiba puts a first-timer in the circuit's own car for ¥45,000–50,000 with no licence needed; and Fuji Speedway's Drift Park opens to organiser days that waive its ¥25,000 licence.

Is there a drift weekend I can do near Nagoya?

Yes, and unlike Kansai it can be a turn-up-and-drive weekend: YZ Circuit East (Gifu, about an hour out) sells drift-legal free-run slots most days, Motorland Mikawa (Aichi) sells drift by the hour in three fixed slots, and Suzuka Twin's drift-only D course plus Motorland Suzuka sit in one village in Mie. YZ confirmed to us that a visitor needs no Japanese licence or IDP. No circuit here rents a drift car, and every booking is a Japanese phone call or email.

Is there a drift weekend I can do near Osaka or Kyoto?

Yes, but it is built around organiser days, not turn-up sessions. Meihan Sportsland in Nara, the Kansai drift home, sells no drift running of its own: cars run only on organiser days, 28 of them between 14 September and 30 December 2026, mostly Sundays. Suzuka Twin (Mie) and Central Circuit (Hyogo) are the other weekend options, and every one of them ends in a car or a taxi.

Which drift school or rental in Japan should a first-timer pick, and what do they cost?

Decide on insurance before price. HYPER DRIVE SCHOOL is the one operator selling crash cover; its shared school day is about ¥83,000, and Team Orange publishes ¥130,000 in English for a car to yourself with tuition, four tyres and fuel. Cheaper first steps: Minami Chiba Circuit's rental drift hour is ¥45,000 on weekdays with no licence needed, and Motorland Kijo in Miyazaki drives from ¥10,000.

When is the next Ebisu Drift Matsuri and when do entries open?

The next one is the Autumn Drift Matsuri at Ebisu Circuit (Fukushima) on Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 November 2026, the last of 2026. Advance entry opens at 00:00 JST on Sunday 11 October and closes Friday 23 October: ¥20,000 without a pit, and the only window in which a pit can be booked. Same-day entry is ¥25,000. No 2027 dates exist yet.

Can I get to Ebisu Circuit from Tokyo without a car?

Yes. Take the Tohoku Shinkansen to Koriyama and a local train to JR Nihonmatsu Station (about 1 h 54 min, from ¥8,360), then a 20-minute taxi or the ¥500 Fukushima Kotsu bus to Safari Park-mae. The bus runs four times a day and only fits a weekend: on weekdays the first one arrives at 11:51, nearly three hours after running starts.

What are the requirements for an overseas driver to enter Formula Drift Japan?

Formula Drift Japan runs three tiers (FDJ, FDJ2, FDJ3), each with its own licence issued through formulad.jp, and a sanctioned series is one of the few places in Japanese drifting where a road licence alone is not enough. Its exact eligibility, fee and car rules for a driver based overseas are not on any page our guides have read, so treat them as TBC and confirm with the series.

Is Daikoku PA still worth visiting in 2026?

Only if you are already driving past in the afternoon. There is no pedestrian access at all, weekend closures start around 20:30 and are decided on the night, and Daikoku Futo is a designated anti-reckless-driving zone where cheering on a drift after a police order carries a fine of up to ¥50,000. Plan a trip around a circuit date instead.

Is touge (mountain-pass) driving or street drifting still a thing in Japan, and is it legal?

Driving a touge (mountain pass) at the legal speed is legal, like any public road; drifting it, or two or more cars running together, is not: that is joint dangerous conduct under article 68 of the Road Traffic Act, up to 2 years or ¥500,000 and 25 points, and since 21 July 2026 sliding the tyres deliberately is dangerous driving if someone is hurt. Street drifting survives in pockets, but the scene moved to circuits decades ago. Watching is not an offence; cheering it on after a police order is fined in designated zones.

How much is an ORIGIN Labo. aero kit, and can I buy one from outside Japan?

¥102,100 ex Japanese tax (about $638) for every 3-piece FRP kit as of 29 September 2026: Drift Line, Racing Line, Stream Line, Stylish Line, Fujin, Raijin and Ryujin for the S13, 180SX, S14, S15, Z33, JZX100 and 86/BRZ; Attack Line is ¥125,200. The maker's own shop ships only inside Japan to business addresses, so overseas buyers go through a local distributor or an exporter. TSUISO orders on a trade account with the maker and crates the kit for sea or air freight, quoted before you pay.

Does the ORIGIN Labo. S14 aero kit fit both zenki and kouki?

Only the side steps and rear bumper do. ORIGIN Labo. lists its S14 kits separately for the zenki (1993 to 1996) and the kouki (1996 to 1998) because the front bumpers are different mouldings; on the Drift Line page the maker marks the side steps (D-308-SS) and rear bumper (D-308-02) as shared, with only the front bumper changing (D-313-01 zenki, D-308-01 kouki). Each 3-piece kit is ¥102,100 ex Japanese tax as of 29 September 2026. Order under the front your car wears, not the year on the registration.

What do ORIGIN Labo. wide fenders and Combat Eye covers cost, and do they need painting?

As of 29 September 2026 a pair of ORIGIN Labo. front fenders (+20 to +75 mm, plain, shark-gill or twin-duct) is ¥35,000 ex Japanese tax (about $219) and rear fenders ¥28,400 to ¥38,300 per pair depending on width and style. Combat Eye headlight covers are ¥20,700 (closed), ¥22,900 (open), ¥26,200 (indicator type) and ¥37,200 (light type) per pair. Everything arrives unpainted: fenders in white gel-coat, Combat Eye in black gel-coat, and the maker states Combat Eye screws are not included.
