Japan — Shibata Jidosha K.K., Sakahogi, Gifu · founded around 2021. On D1 Grand Prix's 2026 registered list

In the 265/35R18 price ladder on the directory: シバNタイヤ (house budget line) ¥8,690 (税込) · R23, compound 240 ¥14,850 (税込) · R23, compound 200R ¥28,270 (税込). Every brand at that size, side by side →

Shibata itself publishes no country of manufacture, but the story is well documented: the tyres are built by Rydanz, a Chinese maker founded in 2011. The founder’s own account is that he went to the Shanghai tyre expo, felt his way around the stands, landed on Rydanz and thought “this is the one” — then visited the factory the next month and spent about eighteen months developing the tyre. The relationship runs both ways, and the division of labour is documented: SHIBATIRE-branded tyres are Shibata-specified and Rydanz-built, while the RYDANZ-branded NORDICA winter tyre in Shibata’s own shop is Rydanz’s own product, sold in Japan without any Shibata development. And the tie is acknowledged from both sides: Rydanz’s own global site lists Shibata Tire as its partner, while Shibata publishes Rydanz’s Japanese site, stocks Rydanz’s whole range — about 180 listings across six model lines — and co-brands SHIBAWHEEL × RYDANZ wheel-and-tyre sets. D1 still registers these under the older name REVIMAX (R23 / R03S 180 / R31); the shop sells them as SHIBATIRE. Same tyres. The brand’s own published results record is mostly grassroots gymkhana and dirt trial, not drift — its drift standing rests on the 240 compound and 18% of the Tsukuba D1 field.

Official site · verified 2026-09-14 · Not from the maker’s own pages — AUTOCAR JAPAN, 6 Feb 2021 — names Rydanz as the manufacturer; GAZOO, 21 Mar 2021 — the founder’s own account of finding Rydanz; Motor Fan, 19 Mar 2023 — the split: SHIBATIRE is Shibata-specified, the NORDICA is Rydanz’s own; Rydanz’s own global site — lists SHIBATA TIRE as its partner

What owners report

Every SHIBATIRE tyre review on Minkara, Japan's largest car-owner community — 1,244 reviews read 14–16 September 2026, counted rather than picked. “Fitted to” counts only reviews that mention drifting and say which axle; “chunking” counts reviews that mention it at all, split by whether the owner says it happened. Stars are Minkara's own 0–5 rating. Owner reports, not tests.

R23 · compound 240 · 45 reviews, 18 about drifting · 4.18 stars

  • Fitted to (drift use): rear 3 · front 2 · both 7
  • Chunking reported: 0 yes · 1 no
  • Tyre life: 5 praise · 2 complaints

The maker’s drift-rear compound, and the only one where drift users outnumber grip users. Nobody reports chunking; the one mention says there is none. Life is the trade: one owner used a set up in a morning of full sessions at Okuibuki in winter.

The 240 feels like it was made for drift rears. No odd grip habits, good smoke. Short life is the catch, but next to the 300 there is none of that strange chunking. (review, Feb 2026)

After two years: roughly five or six grip days (two in rain), four days as drift fronts, and three months of street use. (review, Aug 2024)

R23 · compound 280 · 578 reviews, 23 about drifting · 4.35 stars

  • Fitted to (drift use): rear 2 · front 6 · both 2
  • Chunking reported: 3 yes · 1 no
  • Tyre life: 86 praise · 13 complaints

The bestseller, and a grip tyre in owners’ hands: drift users put it on the front three times as often as the rear. Three chunking reports in 578 reviews, one of them from a heavy-wet circuit day; life praise outnumbers complaints 86 to 13. The one rear-drift horror story was run at 4.5 bar.

Tried two as drift rears: one side was bald after the first ten-minute heat — probably because I ran them at 4.5 bar. (review, Jul 2023)

R23 · compound 300 · 215 reviews, 17 about drifting · 4.46 stars

  • Fitted to (drift use): rear 6 · front 0 · both 5
  • Chunking reported: 0 yes · 1 no
  • Tyre life: 36 praise · 3 complaints

The street compound the maker tells you not to drift on — yet among owners who mention drifting, most fit it to the rear. Nobody reports chunking (one says none) and life praise runs 36 to 3. Read that next to the maker’s warning: casual drift days seem to want exactly this, a cheap rear that lasts.

Durability: five school sessions out of a set, on a par with a Direzza DZ102. (review, Jan 2025)

R23 / R31 · compound 200R · 186 reviews, 4 about drifting · 4.43 stars

  • Fitted to (drift use): rear 0 · front 0 · both 1
  • Chunking reported: not mentioned
  • Tyre life: 24 praise · 7 complaints

The grip compound: 186 reviews and only four mention drifting. Owners talk about lap times and heat, not smoke. For a drifter that is a front tyre, not a rear.

R31 · compound 280R · 108 reviews, 1 about drifting · 4.53 stars

  • Fitted to (drift use): rear 0 · front 0 · both 0
  • Chunking reported: 1 yes · 0 no
  • Tyre life: 8 praise · 7 complaints

The R31 pattern’s 280: the highest-rated Shibatire compound, but almost nobody in this sample drifts on it, and opinions on life split evenly.

compound 380 (discontinued) · 82 reviews, 8 about drifting · 4.18 stars

  • Fitted to (drift use): rear 0 · front 1 · both 4
  • Chunking reported: 1 yes · 1 no
  • Tyre life: 22 praise · 1 complaints

Replaced by the 300. Drift users ran it front and rear and praised its life 22 to 1; the one chunking report came from a three-year user thrashing the last discontinued set.

Ran it front and rear for drifting for about three years, lost count of how many. Now it is discontinued; thrashing the last ones, I got chunking for the first time. (review, Oct 2024)

compound 180 (discontinued) · 24 reviews, 9 about drifting · 4.38 stars

  • Fitted to (drift use): rear 1 · front 0 · both 4
  • Chunking reported: not mentioned
  • Tyre life: 4 praise · 0 complaints

The old soft compound. Owners loved the smoke and the grip and accepted the bill.

Bald after six runs, but smoke, grip and heat were faultless — the only fault was how fast it wore. (review, Dec 2023)

シバN (budget line) · 6 reviews, 4 about drifting · 4.5 stars

  • Fitted to (drift use): rear 3 · front 0 · both 1
  • Chunking reported: 2 yes · 0 no
  • Tyre life: 3 praise · 0 complaints

Six reviews, four of them drift, and the budget line is bought as a rear. Both chunking mentions describe the same thing: a little block loss while cold, then clean wear once hot.

Lost a bit of block on the first run before it was warm, but once up to temperature there was no chunking and it wore out cleanly. Less grip than the R23 240 but easier to control. At ¥8,690 a tyre I will buy it again. (review, Dec 2025)

The maker’s side of the chunking question: Shibata’s president wrote on the company’s R31 HOUSE account in February 2025 that chunking happens on drift rears that overheat from continuous running, that every current SHIBATIRE carries a chunking-resistant compound, and that the 200T’s cold-surface roughness was a different problem fixed in the 200R.
