Owara Circuit (Toyama): Fees, the Briefing Rule and Access (2026)

By Published May 5, 2026 Updated Sep 22, 2026 7 min read

The Rundown

  • A visitor half day at Owara Circuit (Toyama) is ¥7,000, 9:00–12:00 or 13:00–16:00, with members at ¥5,000. Gate entry is ¥500 per person on top, free for members, for anyone of high-school age or under and for holders of a disability certificate.
  • Nobody drives here on their first visit without a pre-booked briefing. The 初走行講習予約フォーム closes at 16:00 the day before, and the form exists only in Japanese.
  • Straight-through exhausts are refused entry to the site outright, and the near-exhaust ceiling is 110 dB measured by the JASMA method. An inner silencer does not count as a silencer, and neither does a catalytic converter.
  • Closed Thursdays and Fridays. Every Thursday and Friday in September 2026 was marked closed on the official schedule, and opening hours are 8:30–17:00.
  • No cars are hired. The rental kart and go-kart business ended in 2026 and nothing replaced it, so you arrive in your own car or you watch.

Yes, you can drift at Owara Circuit (Toyama), and it is the cheapest way to do it on the Japan Sea coast: ¥7,000 for a visitor half day plus ¥500 to get through the gate, checked on the official pages on 22 September 2026. The thing that stops people is not the price. Every running day on the schedule carries the line 「初走行の方は講習がありますので必ず事前予約を行なってください」, and the first-run briefing form closes at 16:00 the day before, so you cannot decide on the morning and turn up. No cars are hired here either, so you arrive in something of your own.

Owara is a small hill circuit above the Yatsuo valley, ten corners, low speed range, technical rather than fast. It also runs a real competition calendar: the 2026 season put D1 NEXT Middle West Rd.3 here on Sunday 20 September, with an official practice day the Saturday before at which straight-through exhausts were already barred.

How much does a day at Owara cost?

One tariff covers four-wheel grip, drift, bikes and racing karts. These are the figures published on the circuit’s own running page, read on 22 September 2026.

What you are paying forVisitorMember
Half day, 9:00–12:00 or 13:00–16:00¥7,000¥5,000
Gri & Dori 2Way, six runs of 30 minutes¥8,000¥6,000
One hour¥5,000¥4,000
Timing, per car¥1,000¥1,000
Second driver on the same carplus ¥3,000plus ¥3,000
Gate entry, per person¥500free
Drift passenger ride, per ride¥2,500¥2,500

Two details the numbers hide. The half-day figure is printed with the tag 【平日】, weekday, and the page publishes no separate weekend price, so treat a Saturday or Sunday rate as unconfirmed until you ask. The second driver line is also voided on event days.

Then read the monthly schedule rather than assuming a day is yours. Through September 2026 most running days gave the morning to グリップ/ドリフト and the afternoon to bikes and karts, so in practice the half day a drifter buys is usually the 9:00 one.

What actually stops a first-timer?

The briefing. Owara will not put a driver on track for the first time without the 初走行講習, and the booking runs through a separate form with its own list of dates. The wording on the site is plain: 「おわらサーキットを初めて走行される方は、初走行講習予約フォームより事前に予約を前日16:00まで にお願いたします」. Prior reservation, by 16:00 the previous day. The form is Japanese only, there is no English page anywhere on the site, and the driver-facing rules that decide whether your car gets on track are published in Japanese too.

The door that shuts at 16:00 is a Japanese form, and that is the part we take on

The briefing slot has to be claimed the afternoon before you drive, on a date the schedule page can still move after your flights are paid for. Send us your travel window and we put the request in, confirm the day is still running as grip and drift, check your licence and your car against rules Owara publishes only in Japanese, and send the answer back to you in English. If you are arriving without a car we arrange the last leg from the station and travel it with you. Actual costs plus a fee, quoted as one total up front. Get an Owara date confirmed in English and the travel from the station handled.

If you would rather ride than drive, the circuit sells a passenger lap in one of its own drift cars for ¥2,500 including entry, one seat, no age limit, booked two days ahead. The wider version of that option is in our guide to riding in a drift car in Japan.

How do you get to Owara without a car?

Not on a bus. This is worth saying carefully, because the honest answer took some digging.

The official site has no access page at all. Its only real pages are the top page, the running page, the briefing form, the ride pages, the schedule and a facilities page; requests for the obvious addresses such as access, map and contact all return the same catch-all placeholder. The facilities page gives driving times to a convenience store (5 minutes), a petrol station (12 minutes) and the local hospital (10 minutes), and names two places to stay nearby, one about 7 minutes away and one about 20. It names no station and no bus stop.

So we went around the circuit. The address is Hirabayashi, Yatsuo-machi, Toyama City. The nearest station is Etchu-Yatsuo (越中八尾) on the JR Takayama Main Line, roughly 25 minutes from Toyama Station. JR West’s own connecting-transport page for that station lists three bus operators and nothing else: Nanto City’s municipal buses, the Toyama City community bus and a community service. We then downloaded all ten Toyama City Yatsuo community bus timetables in force from 1 April 2026, the Yatsuo loop, Sugihara, Yasuuchi, Onagatani, Muromaki, Nodumi, Kurosedani, Kiritani-Myogahara and the high-school and core lines, and searched every stop name on them. None serves Hirabayashi. There is no scheduled bus to this circuit, and that is a verified absence rather than a gap in the website.

What is left is a taxi over the last few kilometres, or a hire car from Toyama. Measured against the national geocoder, the circuit’s district sits about 3.5 km from the station in a straight line, call it 4 km by road. The Toyama district taxi tariff, effective 13 July 2026, sets a standard car at ¥600 for the first 0.93 km and ¥100 per 195 m after that at the ceiling rate, with 20% added between 22:00 and 05:00. Our own arithmetic on a 4 km run gives roughly ¥2,200 each way on distance alone, and the published note says the real meter combines time with distance.

The part nobody writes down is the return leg. Taxis rank at Etchu-Yatsuo and the firms sit in the station’s own neighbourhood, but a car back up to a circuit gate at 16:00 on a weekday is a Japanese phone call, not an app.

What will get your car turned away?

Don't get caught out

A straight-through exhaust is refused entry to the site, not just to the track, and the circuit states plainly that an inner silencer does not count as a structural silencer because it can be removed, and that a catalytic converter is a purifier rather than a silencer. The ceiling is 110 dB by the JASMA near-exhaust method, measured at 0.5 m and 45 degrees behind the tailpipe at 75% of peak-power revs. Rally tyres have been banned in free running since 19 November 2014 because of the rubber they shed.

The four-wheel rules also want a catch tank on any vented blow-by, both battery terminals taped, 3 mm clear acrylic if you have swapped the side or rear glass, doors and bonnet that still open and close properly, and either the original fuel tank or a bulkheaded safety cell. Drivers under 18 need a guardian’s consent and compulsory sports insurance that only starts the day after you apply, so a same-day signup is not covered. For how this sits against the rest of the country, see our Japanese track noise limits and tech rules.

What to bring

  • Your driving licence. Four-wheel grip and drift running requires a valid one, full stop
  • Long sleeves and long trousers. Short sleeves, shorts and rolled-up sleeves are refused on track
  • A full-face or jet helmet. Half-cap helmets are not accepted
  • Racing gloves. Half-finger driving gloves and work gloves are not accepted
  • Trainers, basic tools, a spare tyre, your health insurance card and cash for the gate

Owara or Nihonkai Maze: which Japan Sea venue?

These two are the pair. Maze is the one with no licence and no reservation; Owara is the cheaper day with a gate you have to unlock in advance.

Cheapest visitor session¥7,000 half day¥9,500 three-hour weekday
Gate entry¥500¥1,500 weekday, ¥2,000 weekend

The Maze figures come from our own check of 8 September 2026, set out in the regional guide to drifting in Hokuriku and Niigata. If you want the competition weekend rather than seat time, the series is explained in what D1 NEXT actually is, and every venue we have verified sits in the track directory.

Frequently asked questions

Can a foreigner drift at Owara Circuit?

Yes, with two conditions that have nothing to do with nationality. Owara Circuit in Toyama requires a valid driving licence for any four-wheel grip or drift running, and it requires every first-time driver to book the 初走行講習 briefing through its online form by 16:00 the day before. There is no English page anywhere on the site and the form is Japanese only, so the paperwork is the real barrier. As of 22 September 2026 a visitor half day is ¥7,000 plus ¥500 gate entry, paid on the day.

How much is a session at Owara Circuit?

As of 22 September 2026, Owara Circuit in Toyama charges a visitor ¥7,000 for a half-day session of 9:00–12:00 or 13:00–16:00 and ¥5,000 for a member. The grip-and-drift 2Way ticket, six runs of 30 minutes, is ¥8,000 visitor and ¥6,000 member, and a single hour is ¥5,000 or ¥4,000. Timing is ¥1,000 per car, a second driver on the same car adds ¥3,000, and gate entry is ¥500 per person.

How do you get to Owara Circuit from Toyama?

There is no scheduled public transport to the gate. Owara Circuit sits in Hirabayashi, Yatsuo, in the hills south of Toyama City, and the nearest station is Etchu-Yatsuo on the JR Takayama Main Line, roughly 25 minutes from Toyama Station and about 4 km short of the circuit. None of the ten Toyama City Yatsuo community bus routes in force from 1 April 2026 has a stop in Hirabayashi, so the last leg is a taxi or a hire car. On the Toyama tariff that took effect on 13 July 2026, a 4 km taxi run works out at roughly ¥2,200 one way before the time component.

Can you ride in a drift car at Owara Circuit without driving?

Yes. Owara Circuit in Toyama sells a passenger ride in one of its own machines for ¥2,500 per ride, and that price includes the ¥500 gate entry. One seat per ride, no age limit, paid on the day, booked two days in advance, and the car is not yours to choose because the circuit rotates them for servicing. Rides run in 30-minute windows from 9:30 and from 13:30 on days the schedule marks as grip and drift, and you can ask the driver for slow, normal or fast.
