Drifting in Hokuriku & Niigata (2026): Two Tracks in Five Prefectures
The Rundown
- Two venues on the Japan Sea side sell drift running to the public: Nihonkai Maze Circuit (Niigata) and Owara Circuit (Toyama). Owara is the cheaper day at ¥7,000 for a visitor's half-day plus a ¥500 gate fee; Maze is ¥9,500 for a visitor's three-hour weekday session plus ¥1,500 at the gate.
- Nihonkai Maze Circuit needs no circuit licence and no reservation. Its own page says so in one line — 「特別なライセンスがなくても、走行することが可能です」 — and the day is: turn up, pay at the gate from 08:00, enter at the office, run 09:00–12:00 or 13:00–16:00.
- Weekends at Maze are grip, not drift. The monthly schedule marks every Saturday and Sunday 4輪(グリップ)and only Monday to Friday 4輪(ドリ・グリ), drift and grip mixed. The drift-only 25-minute slots at 08:00 and 12:00 do run at weekends, but those need a phone booking.
- Owara Circuit will not let a first-timer on track without a pre-booked briefing, submitted through its Japanese form by 16:00 the previous day. Its noise ceiling is 110 dB near-exhaust and straight-pipe exhausts are refused entry to the site at all.
- Ishikawa has nothing for cars. Search it and you get radio-control model tracks — Champion Kanazawa Model, trading since 1979, runs an indoor RC circuit in Kanazawa. Across 6 of its own pages, Fukui's Takasu Circuit never once uses the word ドリフト.

Two venues on the Japan Sea side of Honshu sell drift running to a member of the public: Nihonkai Maze Circuit in Niigata City, Niigata, and Owara Circuit in Toyama. Owara is the cheaper day — ¥7,000 for a visitor’s half-day plus a ¥500 gate fee — while Maze asks ¥9,500 for a visitor’s three-hour weekday session plus ¥1,500 at the gate, and asks for no circuit licence and no reservation at all. Ishikawa has nothing for cars, Fukui’s one circuit never puts the word drift in writing, and Nagano’s options are karts and dirt. All of it was checked on the official pages on 8 September 2026.
Nobody writes this coast up in English, which is how people end up flying into Komatsu on the strength of a name they half remember.

Two rows of that table are a trip. The other three are why this page exists.
Can you drift at Nihonkai Maze Circuit, and what does the day look like?
Nihonkai Maze Circuit sits at 610 Mase, Nishikan Ward, Niigata City — a seaside circuit west of the city, and the venue that hosted both rounds of the D1 NEXT Niigata Series on 18 and 19 July 2026, covered in our Round 1 report from Maze.
The remarkable thing is how little it asks of you. Most Japanese circuits gate free running behind an annual club licence; Maze puts one line on its own page instead — 「MAZECIRCUITは、特別なライセンスがなくても、走行することが可能です」, you can run at MAZE Circuit without any special licence. It then spells out the day: find a four-wheel or drift date on the monthly schedule, turn up (「予約は必要ありません」, no reservation needed), pay at the gate, enter at the office, run. Gates open at 08:00; sessions are 09:00–12:00 and 13:00–16:00, with a briefing for first-timers on the spot.
A visitor pays ¥9,500 for the three-hour session on a weekday and ¥11,500 at a weekend or public holiday, plus a gate fee of ¥1,500 or ¥2,000. A MAZE licence holder pays ¥8,000 or ¥10,000 and walks in free; that licence is ¥33,000 for the first year, renewing at ¥28,000. Never been on a circuit at all? The taiken-soukou (体験走行, trial run) is 25 minutes at ¥4,000 on a weekday, gate fee and briefing included, helmet and gloves lent free — phone booking, first-timers only.
Weekends at Maze are grip. Don't fly in for a Saturday
The legend on every monthly schedule reads 「4輪=4輪グリップ(平日はドリフト・グリップ混走)」 — four-wheel means grip, and drift and grip run together on weekdays only. The grid holds it up: 26 to 30 October 2026 are all 4輪(ドリ・グリ), while Sunday 25 and Saturday 31 October are 4輪(グリップ). The drift-only 25-minute slots at 08:00 and 12:00 do run at weekends, ¥4,500 on a weekday and ¥5,500 at a weekend, but the schedule marks them 要予約 and says 「お電話にてご予約下さい」 — book by telephone.
One gap worth knowing: Maze publishes no decibel limit. Its four-wheel safety regulations say only that a modified exhaust must carry a silencer, so a dB ceiling is TBC as of 8 September 2026.
How do you book Owara Circuit in Toyama?
Owara Circuit, in the Yatsuo hills south of Toyama City, is the busier of the two and the one with a competition calendar — D1 NEXT Middle West Round 3 runs there on 20 September 2026, with an official practice day on the Saturday before at which straight-pipe exhausts are barred. That and the rest of the season are on our event calendar; the series format is explained in our Middle West round report.
Running there is cheap. A visitor pays ¥7,000 for a half-day, either 09:00–12:00 or 13:00–16:00, against ¥5,000 for a member, and that price covers four-wheel, drift, bike and kart alike. Better value is the guri-dori 2Way — grip and drift both — at ¥8,000 for six 30-minute runs, ¥6,000 for members. A single hour is ¥5,000, timing ¥1,000, a second driver ¥3,000, and site entry a flat ¥500. The course closes on most Thursdays and Fridays.
The step that catches people is the briefing. Every running day on Owara’s calendar carries the same note — 「初走行の方は講習がありますので必ず事前予約を行なってください」, first-timers have a briefing, so be sure to book in advance — and that booking is an online form, in Japanese, closing at 16:00 the day before. Owara also sells a passenger ride in one of its own drift cars: ¥2,500 including the gate fee, no age limit, 30-minute slots, booked two days out.
What a Japan Sea drift day assumes you already have
- Your own dorisha (ドリ車, drift car), and a valid driving licence. Neither venue hires you a car; Owara ended even its rental kart operation in 2026
- The right helmet and gloves. Owara refuses half-cap helmets, fingerless driving gloves and cotton work gloves, and wants long sleeves, long trousers and trainers
- A legal exhaust for Owara. 110 dB near-exhaust, straight pipes refused entry outright, and neither an inner silencer nor a catalytic converter counts as a silencer
- Grip tyres, not rally rubber. Owara has banned rally tyres in free running since 19 November 2014
What about Ishikawa, Fukui and Nagano?
This is where the search results stop meaning what they say. Here is what actually comes back.
| What the search returns | Where | What it actually is |
|---|---|---|
| Takasu Circuit | Fukui City, Fukui | A licensed grip circuit. Its regulations, course, facility, schedule, sport-running and licence pages contain ドリフト zero times, and the rulebook is handed out at the licence course, not published. 4R licence ¥13,000, then ¥4,000 per 20-minute session from April 2026. Drift TBC |
| Sportsland Shinshu | Nagano City, Nagano | A dirt-trial circuit — 「本格ダートトライアルサーキット」 in its own words — not tarmac. Its free-running notice asks for a booking a week ahead, by form or on 090-4756-4586, and names a five-person minimum. Drift is not mentioned anywhere |
| Circuit Azumino, Azumino F-1 Park | Ikeda and Azumino, Nagano | Karts. One runs racing-kart classes and sells karts; the other is a rental kart park. Cars appear on neither |
| Champion Kanazawa Model | Kanazawa, Ishikawa | A radio-control model shop, trading since 1979, with an indoor RC circuit — the closest thing to a “drift circuit” an Ishikawa search returns |
| Sportsland Yamanashi (SLy) | Nirasaki, Yamanashi | Outside the region but picked up by Nagano searches. Drift is banned in normal sport-run sessions, possible only on private hire of the short course |
So Ishikawa has no car venue we could find, Fukui has a circuit that sells grip and will not put drift in writing either way, and Nagano has dirt and karts. For tarmac drift on this coast it is Niigata or Toyama, and nothing in between.
Can you get to Nihonkai Maze Circuit without a car?
The circuit’s own access page is an address, a phone number and opening hours — no station, no bus. Dig one level down and the answer is much better than that.
West Kanko Bus runs the Maze line from Maki Station on the JR Echigo Line, through Iwamuro Station and Iwamuro Onsen, out to the village of Mase: 15.9 km, ending at a stop called simply 間瀬. Under the timetable in force from 1 April 2026 the 07:32 from Maki reaches Mase at 08:15 — gates open at 08:00, running starts at 09:00 — and weekday returns leave Mase at 06:49, 08:15, 10:10, 13:25, 14:52 and 17:13, the last reaching Maki at 17:55. Fares run from ¥160 to ¥620. Or skip the commute: a minshuku (民宿, family-run guest house) sits a minute’s walk from the gate at ¥4,000 room-only or ¥7,000 with two meals, at a rate reserved for circuit users.
Then the catch. From 1 April 2026 the city and the operator converted part of this timetable to jizen-yoyaku-bin (事前予約便, book-in-advance services). On a Saturday, Sunday or public holiday every Maze-line bus, in both directions, is reservation-only — three each way, and nothing else.
The last step here is a phone call in Japanese, and at a weekend it is two
Every monthly schedule Nihonkai Maze Circuit publishes ends with the same line: dates move when a private hire comes in, so ask about availability before you travel. That ask is a telephone call to 0256-85-2201, in Japanese. Owara Circuit will not put a first-timer on track at all unless the briefing slot is held through its Japanese form by 16:00 the previous day. And the reservation-only Maze-line buses are taken on a separate dial that answers 09:00 to 17:00 on weekdays only, closes the night before travel, and needs a Monday seat requested by the preceding Friday. Send us your travel window and the prefecture and we take those calls on: we confirm the date you picked is genuinely a four-wheel drift day and not a grip day, settle the fee, the kit list and the noise rule in English, hold the briefing slot, and arrange the leg from the station to the paddock and back. See what a Japan Sea drift day looks like when we arrange it.
Which one fits your trip
Crossing the Alps from Nagoya? Owara is the natural stop and the cheaper session, and it slots into the run described in our Tokai and Nagoya guide. Coming up from Tokyo with no car? Maze is the one that works: a weekday, the 07:32 bus out of Maki, ¥9,500 plus ¥1,500 at the gate, and nothing to book except the call that confirms the day is still yours. Layouts for the rest of the country are in the track directory.
Frequently asked questions
Can you drift in Niigata?
Yes, at Nihonkai Maze Circuit in Nishikan Ward, Niigata City, on the Sea of Japan coast. Drift is a named line on the circuit's own price list, and on weekdays the three-hour four-wheel session is run as 4輪(ドリ・グリ), drift and grip mixed, from 09:00 to 12:00 and 13:00 to 16:00. As of 8 September 2026 a visitor pays ¥9,500 for that session on a weekday and ¥11,500 at a weekend or public holiday, plus a gate fee of ¥1,500 or ¥2,000. No circuit licence is required and no reservation is needed for the three-hour slot. Note that the Saturday and Sunday four-wheel sessions are marked grip only on the monthly schedule; the drift-only 25-minute slots at 08:00–09:00 and 12:00–13:00 do run at weekends, at ¥4,500 on a weekday and ¥5,500 at a weekend, and those must be booked by telephone.
How much does a drift day at Owara Circuit in Toyama cost?
As of 8 September 2026, Owara Circuit in Toyama charges a visitor ¥7,000 for a half-day sport-running session, either 09:00–12:00 or 13:00–16:00, with members paying ¥5,000. Its grip-and-drift 2Way ticket is ¥8,000 for six 30-minute runs, ¥6,000 for members, and a single hour is ¥5,000 or ¥4,000. Entry to the site is ¥500 on top, free for members, for anyone of high-school age or under and for holders of a disability certificate. Timing is ¥1,000 per car and a second driver on the same car adds ¥3,000. A first-timer must also book the first-run briefing through the circuit's Japanese online form by 16:00 the day before.
Can you get to Nihonkai Maze Circuit without a car?
Yes, on a weekday. West Kanko Bus runs the Maze line from Maki Station on the JR Echigo Line through Iwamuro to the village of Mase, 15.9 km, and under the timetable in force from 1 April 2026 the 07:32 from Maki reaches Mase at 08:15, in time for the 09:00 start, with returns from Mase at 13:25, 14:52 and 17:13. Fares on the route run from ¥160 to ¥620. At weekends and on public holidays it is much harder: all three services each way are reservation-only, taken on a dedicated line, 09:00 to 17:00 on weekdays only, and closing the day before travel. Bookings for a Monday service must be in by the preceding Friday. There is also lodging one minute's walk from the gate, from ¥4,000 room-only, bookable only by Japanese mobile phone.
Is drifting allowed at Takasu Circuit in Fukui?
Takasu Circuit in Fukui City does not say, and that is the honest answer as of 8 September 2026. The word ドリフト appears nowhere across its regulations, course, facility, schedule, sport-running, private-hire or licence pages, and the circuit states that the full rulebook is handed out at the licence course rather than published. What Takasu does sell is licensed grip running: a 4R four-wheel course licence costs ¥13,000 for a general member including the first annual fee, with a compulsory briefing, after which a 20-minute session is ¥4,000 under the tariff in force from April 2026. Treat drift there as TBC and settle it before you build a trip around it.
