The Rundown

  • KING OF THE STRIP Rd.2 runs on 11 October 2026 (rain date 12 October) at SKY-GATE AIBETSU in Hokkaido. Spectators pay ¥1,000; junior-high age and under go free.
  • JD-STER, a motorcycle drag series, holds its 2026 Rd.2 on 1 November 2026 at the JARI Shirosato Test Center (Ibaraki), ¥1,000 to watch plus ¥1,000 to park a car. Rd.1 on 20 September was cancelled for a typhoon.
  • SUPER DRAG FESTIVAL 2026 runs on 22 November 2026 at Central Circuit (Hyogo), with the DRAG FESTIVAL WEST series final on 21 November. At the 3 October round, spectators paid ¥2,000 and a first-timer's entry started at ¥17,000 including insurance.
  • The Motegi STREET SHOOT OUT held two rounds in 2026 (29 March and 2 May). The organiser says drag racing can no longer run at Mobility Resort Motegi because the course has closed.
  • None of the organisers' pages mention rental cars or overseas entrants, and DRAG FESTIVAL asks for a signed pledge sent by post with the fee, as of 5 October 2026.

Where can you see drag racing in Japan as a visitor? The next official race is KING OF THE STRIP Rd.2 on 11 October 2026 at SKY-GATE AIBETSU (Hokkaido), at ¥1,000 a head. On the main island, SUPER DRAG FESTIVAL closes the season at Central Circuit (Hyogo) on 21–22 November 2026, where the October round charged spectators ¥2,000. Every date and fee here was checked on the official pages on 5 Oct 2026.

Japanese drag racing is called zero-yon (ゼロヨン): zero to yon, four, for the 400-metre sprint. It has a street-racing past. Doing it on a public road is illegal in Japan, so don’t. The events below are the legal version, on closed venues, with timing and safety rules.

The old national body, JHRA, still has a website, but its last season was 2013. We left it out.

Can you just watch?

Yes. Watching is the easy part. KING OF THE STRIP charges ¥1,000, and children of junior-high age and under go free. The site rules ban alcohol, open flames and any riding inside the venue, and some parking is on unpaved grass.

JD-STER also charges ¥1,000, plus ¥1,000 for a car. Gates open at 8:00, qualifying starts at 8:30, the final ladders start at 13:00 and the gates shut at 16:00. The venue is a working test centre. The organiser bans photos outside the drag area and will delete them if it catches you.

At Central Circuit, a DRAG FESTIVAL day opened its gates at 7:00 on 3 October. Spectators paid the circuit’s ¥1,000 gate plus a ¥1,000 event fee. The page for the 22 November SUPER DRAG FESTIVAL was not up yet when we checked, so wait for its own price.

Can you run your own car, or your rental?

This is where it gets thin. No organiser’s page mentions rental cars or overseas entrants. None lists a competition licence either. What they do require is a helmet, long sleeves, gloves and a ¥2,000 yearly insurance policy.

DRAG FESTIVAL’s INDEX class is aimed at beginners and standard cars. The 3 October event page put a first-timer’s entry at ¥15,000, while the entry form said ¥17,000, both plus ¥2,000 insurance. The cap was 100 cars. KING OF THE STRIP refuses cars on temporary plates and keeps your fee if you cancel. Our drift car rental guide explains why damage costs are your problem on most hired cars. Treat a road rental at a drag event as a no until the rental company says yes in writing.

There is one low-key way to run. On the Friday before DRAG FESTIVAL’s 3 October round, Central Circuit ran its own zero-yon free session from 13:00 to 16:30 at ¥2,200 a run. The organiser said the general public could run, after a compulsory 12:00 drivers’ meeting. Foreign teams do take part: two of the 37 covered pits for the October round were reserved for a team from Thailand.

Where do visitors get stuck?

DRAG FESTIVAL takes entries only through a Japanese web form. The organiser warns that it breaks on phones and tablets. After that, you print a pledge, fill it in, and post it with the entry fee in cash by registered mail to the office in Aichi. KING OF THE STRIP takes payment by bank transfer, in person at a shop in Sapporo, or by the same cash post. A cash envelope and a Japanese bank transfer are hard to manage on a short visit.

The Japanese form and the cash in the post

Entering a Japanese drag day means a Japanese form, a posted pledge and a domestic payment, which is where trips stall. Send us your dates and we will plan your drift days around a drag weekend and take on the Japanese-only steps.

How does a drag day fit a drift trip?

Central Circuit is the obvious pairing. It is also one of Kansai’s drift venues: the Satomin Drift day runs on its car park on 18 October 2026. Our Central Circuit guide covers that day, the ¥1,000 gate and the bus from Nishiwaki-shi Station.

In Hokkaido, our Hokkaido tracks guide covers the island’s two drift circuits, Shin-Chitose Motorland and Tokachi Speedway. If you were planning on Motegi, its drag days have ended, and our Motegi guide explains why drifting is not allowed there either. For every drift day near these dates, open the drift event calendar.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I watch drag racing in Japan in 2026?

As of 5 October 2026, three official drag events are still to come in 2026. KING OF THE STRIP Rd.2 is on 11 October at SKY-GATE AIBETSU, Hokkaido (¥1,000). JD-STER Rd.2, for motorcycles, is on 1 November at the JARI Shirosato Test Center, Ibaraki (¥1,000 plus ¥1,000 car parking). SUPER DRAG FESTIVAL is on 22 November at Central Circuit, Hyogo, after the DRAG FESTIVAL WEST final on 21 November; the October round there charged spectators ¥2,000.

What does zero-yon mean in Japan?

Zero-yon (ゼロヨン) is the Japanese name for a standing-start 400-metre sprint, from zero and yon, the Japanese word for four. As of 5 October 2026, Japan's drag events run it on closed venues: Central Circuit in Hyogo, SKY-GATE AIBETSU in Hokkaido and the JARI Shirosato Test Center in Ibaraki. Doing it on a public road is illegal in Japan.

Can a tourist enter a drag race in Japan with their own or a rented car?

Not officially stated. As of 5 October 2026, none of the official pages for DRAG FESTIVAL, KING OF THE STRIP or JD-STER mention overseas entrants or rental cars, and no competition licence is listed. DRAG FESTIVAL's INDEX class welcomes beginners and standard cars at ¥15,000 to ¥17,000 plus ¥2,000 insurance, but the entry form is Japanese, computer-only, and the signed pledge goes to the organiser by post with the fee.

How much does it cost to watch SUPER DRAG FESTIVAL at Central Circuit?

The 2026 SUPER DRAG FESTIVAL (22 November 2026, Central Circuit, Hyogo) had no event page as of 5 October 2026, so its ticket price is not officially stated. At the DRAG FESTIVAL WEST round there on 3 October 2026, spectators paid ¥2,000: the circuit's ¥1,000 gate plus a ¥1,000 event fee.

Is there still drag racing at Motegi?

No further dates. The Motegi STREET SHOOT OUT ran on 29 March and 2 May 2026 on the oval course at Mobility Resort Motegi (Tochigi). The organiser's October 2026 page says the course has closed, so drag racing can no longer be held there. As of 5 October 2026, it points Motegi regulars to Central Circuit in Hyogo instead.
