Drift Lessons in Japan: Can a Beginner Book a Drift School? (2026)

Yes, and it is cheaper than almost anywhere else on earth. The cheapest confirmed beginner lesson is the CDA Drift Beginner Track Day at YZ Circuit East (Gifu) on Thursday 8 October 2026, at ¥11,500 for a non-member. The catch is not the price and not your skill level: every coached day below expects you to turn up in your own car, and every entry route runs in Japanese. What does a “drift school” mean in Japan?

There is no Japanese equivalent of the Western racing school, where you hand over a credit card and are handed a car. What exists instead is the 練習会 (renshūkai, practice day) and the coached 走行会 (sōkōkai, private track day). An organiser rents the circuit, caps the field deliberately small, and puts an experienced driver on hand to watch you and give advice between sessions.

Several are aimed squarely at people who cannot drift at all yet. YZ Circuit East’s own beginner page says it in plain Japanese: it does not matter if you cannot drift, and it does not matter if you have never tried. The morning is one-corner practice with staff releasing cars one at a time, the field splits into a faster and a slower group, and the small P pad stays open all day for figure-of-eights and constant-radius circles.

The teaching is real, not a formality. In Class A of the Kuniaki Takahashi Drift Lesson Q&A at Mobara Twin Circuit (Chiba), the published syllabus runs from circuit manners and driving position through steering technique to 定常円 (jōjōen, holding a constant circle) and the figure-of-eight. The instructor drives your car to judge its setup before advising you. Class A takes five entrants, Class B fifteen.

What do these days cost and when do they run?

Two things stand out. The first is the price: a full day of tuition from a competing professional costs less than a single set of drift tyres, and the wider price ladder is in our cost of drifting in Japan guide.

The second is how often the fee is simply not published. Four of the eight days above list a date and nothing else, because the circuit only sells the slot and the organiser sets the price privately. That is normal here, and it is not a sign the day is fake. It does mean the number arrives in a Japanese reply rather than on a web page.

Note also how small these fields are. MJ Style Drift Practice caps at 20 cars, the Gunma beginners day at 10, and the Gunma format is nothing but donuts, figure-eights and slalom in front of the control tower for as long as you want. You are not queueing behind forty people.

What do you actually have to bring?

Why can’t you simply book one?

The step you cannot do from abroad is the entry itself, and it is worth being precise about how it fails. YZ Circuit East takes the CDA beginner day by email only, and the subject line must read ビギナー走行会申込 exactly, with your name, address, a Japanese mobile number and your car model in the body; cancel inside a week and the full fee is still charged. Mobara Twin Circuit refuses phone, fax and email bookings outright, leaving the counter or the web form, and a web booking is voided unless payment reaches a designated Japanese bank account within three days, with a questionnaire and a spec sheet sent by fax or email three days before the date. The Gunma beginners day on 1 November 2026 takes entries by direct message on X. Underneath all of that sits the same assumption: the car in your pit is yours.

Which one should a first-timer aim at?

If you want a taught day with a published price and a small field, it is a two-horse race. YZ Circuit East (Gifu) runs the CDA beginner day on the second Thursday of most months at ¥11,500, with one-corner practice all morning and the P pad open all day. Mobara Twin Circuit (Chiba) is far easier to reach, roughly 45 minutes from Tokyo by train, and its Class A costs ¥15,000 booked ahead and includes lunch.
