Used JDM Engine Prices in Japan: SR20, 1JZ, 2JZ, RB, 4A-G (Oct 2026)
The Rundown
- Median sold price on Yahoo Auctions Japan, 120 days to 1 October 2026: SR20DET ¥325,750 (32 sales), 1JZ-GTE ¥508,500 (16), 2JZ-GTE ¥556,500 (8), RB26DETT ¥803,500 (8), RB25DET ¥150,150 (12), 4A-G ¥180,000 (25).
- The median buys a bare used engine with no running guarantee. Across 97 engine sales, only 7 listings said the engine was running when pulled, and 11 included the ECU or harness; gearboxes and turbos sell separately.
- Supply is thin at the top: 40 closed 2JZ-GTE listings produced 8 sales in four months, against 71 and 32 for the SR20DET. Prices move little week to week; our 24 September and 1 October reads differ by under 2% on every engine with ten or more sales.
- Add the gearbox from the same index: SR20DET 5-speed ¥87,000 median, R154 for the JZ engines ¥181,500, Z33 6-speed ¥90,000. A single-turbo kit for a 1JZ sold at a ¥40,000 median across 49 sales.
- None of it goes in the post. Japan Post refuses engines on every line, Buyee, tenso and ZenMarket refuse them too, and DHL palletises anything over 70 kg, so an engine leaves Japan as sea or crated air freight with no rate card.

Used engines in Japan, sold prices to 1 October 2026
Every overseas build thread ends at the same question: what does the engine actually cost in Japan, before anyone adds a margin? Not the asking price on an exporter’s site, the price Japanese buyers paid. This page answers it from the closed-auction results on Yahoo Auctions Japan, the marketplace most used drift engines pass through, read on 1 October 2026 for the previous 120 days. Sold listings only, asking prices never counted, and the number of sales printed next to every median so you can see how thin it is. The prices were checked on the official pages on 1 October 2026 and the shipping rules on 19 September 2026. Dollars are at ¥160 to $1.

| CA18DET (early S13, 180SX) | 4, thin | ¥92,500 ($578) | ¥79,000 to ¥227,500 | ¥77,000 to ¥270,000 | 27 Sep | –¥7,500 |
| 13B-REW (FD3S) | 3, thin | ¥150,000 ($938) | ¥91,100 to ¥458,000 | ¥91,100 to ¥458,000 | 16 Aug | no change |
Two things stand out before you read the medians as prices. The ranges are enormous, because a listing titled “engine” covers everything from a complete, recently running unit with its ancillaries to a bare block somebody pulled from a crashed car. And the counts are small: a complete 2JZ-GTE or RB26 changes hands on Yahoo a couple of times a month, so one unusual sale moves the median. Where the count is under five we print the figure but flag it as thin.
The week-to-week stability is the useful part. We read the same searches on 24 September and again on 1 October; every engine with ten or more sales moved by less than 2%. These are settled markets, not auctions you can time.
What is actually in the box at the median?
We read every sold title in the index for the words that change what you get. The pattern is the same across the Nissan and Toyota engines: the median is a bare used engine, sold as seen.
| Engine | Sales | Stated as running when pulled (実動) | ECU or harness included | Gearbox attached | Listed as junk or parts donor |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| SR20DET | 32 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 0 |
| 1JZ-GTE | 16 | 2 | 2 | 2 | 0 |
| 2JZ-GTE | 8 | 0 | 2 | 0 | 0 |
| RB26DETT | 8 | 0 | 1 | 0 | 0 |
| RB25DET | 12 | 0 | 3 | 0 | 3 |
| 4A-G | 25 | 3 | 0 | 0 | 1 |
Seven of 97 sales promised a running engine. Nobody promised compression figures. So the median is the starting point of a parts list, and the rest of the list has its own prices in the same index:
| What you add | Sales | Median | Middle half |
|---|---|---|---|
| SR20DET 5-speed gearbox (complete) | 8 | ¥87,000 ($544) | ¥67,975 to ¥98,000 |
| R154 gearbox for 1JZ and 2JZ | 18 | ¥181,500 ($1,134) | ¥150,000 to ¥216,325 |
| Z33 6-speed gearbox, the swap favourite | 7 | ¥90,000 ($563) | ¥75,000 to ¥158,000 |
| HKS GT turbo or kit for an SR20 | 32 | ¥73,400 ($459) | ¥41,625 to ¥148,000 |
| 1JZ single-turbo kit (T518Z, T67, TD06 class) | 49 | ¥40,000 ($250) | ¥29,500 to ¥63,000 |
| Trust TD06 turbo | 14 | ¥84,000 ($525) | ¥44,000 to ¥157,500 |
A complete SR20DET drivetrain at the medians, engine plus gearbox plus a used HKS turbo, is therefore about ¥486,000 in Japan before a single yen of freight. A 1JZ with an R154 and a single-turbo kit is about ¥730,000. Those are the numbers to compare against a crate engine at home, not the bare-engine median on its own.
Why is the 1JZ nearly ¥200,000 more than an SR20?
Count the listings, not the forum opinions. In the window, Yahoo closed 71 SR20DET engine listings and 32 of them sold; it closed 79 1JZ listings and 16 sold, 40 2JZ-GTE listings and 8 sold, 17 RB26DETT listings and 8 sold. The SR20 is the engine of the S13, S14, S15 and 180SX all at once, so supply is deep and buyers can wait for a good one. The JZ engines come out of a smaller pool of JZX Chasers, Mark IIs, Soarers and Supras, the cars themselves are rising, and the engine has become the default swap for every chassis that wants more than an SR can give. Masashi Yokoi’s 2026 D1 Grand Prix title charge is in an S14 with a 3.4-litre 2JZ-GTE, which we covered in his driver profile; that is the kind of exposure that keeps the 2JZ median where it is on eight sales.
The 4A-G is the opposite market: 35 listings, 25 sales, a 71% sell-through, and a ¥180,000 median for an engine that was in every AE86 and AE92. If you own a Hachiroku, the engine is the cheap part; the shell is the expensive one, which our AE86 price guide explains.
How does a used engine get out of Japan?
Not in the post, and not through a proxy. Japan Post’s dangerous-goods search grades Engine as refused on all three of its lines, ordinary domestic mail, domestic air and international mail. Buyee’s all-country prohibited list names engines, tenso.com names them, and ZenMarket refuses anything over 150 cm or 30 kg through its carriers. Couriers have published ceilings an engine walks straight through: DHL Express’s 2026 Japan guide allows 70 kg per non-palletised piece and requires anything heavier to go on a pallet.
So an engine leaves as freight. JETRO’s guidance explains why nobody can quote it from a rate card: the base rate applies to the greater of volume or weight, then CFS handling, terminal handling and surcharges are added on top. The domestic leg has its own habits, too. When we read 120 live Nissan engine listings in September, 56 named Seino as the carrier, 32 said depot hold only, and 17 said the engine could not be shipped at all, meaning collection in person. Every step of that, from the seller’s depot to your port, is in shipping a used engine from Japan.
Want a specific SR20, 1JZ or 2JZ, not a median?
Send us the engine code, the chassis it is going into and what has to come with it (gearbox, ECU, turbo). We find the engine on the Japanese market, ask the seller what the listing does not say, and reply with one landed total before anything is bought.
What about the 2JZ-GE, RB20 and the engines not listed?
The index follows 48 parts that drift buyers actually ask us for, and the engine list is the turbo engines plus the 4A-G and the 13B. Readers asked this week about the 2JZ-GE, the non-turbo 3.0 litre from the JZA80 Supra NA, Aristo, Crown and Mark II, so it joins the index from the November read; we do not print a price for it until the sales are counted. The same applies to the RB20DET, the SR20DE and the 1JZ-GE: if you want one, send the code and we count the market for you before quoting.
The full table, with LSDs, coilovers by chassis, seats, wheels and the month-on-month moves from here on, is the drift parts price index. For what the cars those engines came out of cost today, the JZX100 Chaser buyer’s guide and the S14 guide carry the same kind of census for whole cars.
Frequently asked questions
Is the median the price I would pay for a used SR20DET or 2JZ from Japan?
No. It is what Japanese buyers paid for the engine itself on Yahoo Auctions Japan in the 120 days to 1 October 2026. To your door you add domestic freight to the exporter (engines travel by truck to a depot, often Seino), packing or crating, our fee, international sea or air freight, and your own country's duty and tax. We quote that as one figure for a specific engine before you commit.
Are these engines tested or guaranteed to run?
Mostly not. Of 97 engine sales in the index, only 7 listings stated the engine was running when removed, and sellers rarely offer any guarantee. The bottom of each price range is where junk and parts-donor engines sit; 3 of the 12 RB25DET sales were listed as junk or for parts. When we buy for you we ask the seller about compression, history and what is missing, and we say no when the answers are thin.
Can I get a 2JZ-GTE for ¥100,000?
The cheapest 2JZ-GTE sale in the window was ¥101,000, but the middle half of sales ran from ¥258,700 to ¥981,275 and the median was ¥556,500 from only 8 sales. A six-figure 2JZ at the bottom of the range is usually incomplete or sold without any history; budget for the median and treat anything far below it as a question, not a bargain.
How often are these engine prices updated?
Monthly, on the 1st, from closed Yahoo Auctions listings over roughly the previous 120 days. This article is the 1 October 2026 read; the live table with all 48 parts, including LSDs, coilovers, seats and wheels, is our drift parts price index. The non-turbo 2JZ-GE joins the index from the November read.
