The three words that decide the price
ジャンク. Yahoo! Auctions’ help defines its lowest condition grade, 全体的に状態が悪い, as 「中古品。大きな傷や汚れや、使用に支障が出るレベルで不具合がある。ジャンク品など。」 — a used item with defects at a level that interferes with use, junk goods and the like. A seller who types ジャンク has chosen that grade on purpose. Mercari’s seller guideline carries the same six grades and tells sellers to disclose functional defects, not only scratches.
現状渡し. The dictionary gloss is “handing something over in its present state; selling as-is, especially second-hand goods”. On a knuckle it means nobody is promising it is straight.
ノークレーム・ノーリターン. No claim, no return — NCNR for short. It is a phrase sellers use, not a rule either platform publishes; it does not appear on the help pages we read. What Yahoo’s pages do say is that a return starts as a conversation in the 取引メッセージ, and that once the money has been released to the seller, Yahoo’s system cannot refund it.
The ジャンク exclusion is written down
Yahoo's 商品満足サポート pays PayPay points equal to the winning price, up to ¥10,000, if you apply within 45 days of a purchase that left you unsatisfied. The help page lists what it will not cover: a listing whose title, description or photos carried 「ジャンク品」 or 「動作未確認」; an item that matches its description (「予想と違った」 does not count); and, where such a warning exists, a fault in a function the seller never mentioned.

Yahoo! Auctions and Mercari are different machines
The vocabulary overlaps. The mechanics do not, and the mechanics decide whether you can win the part at all.
Yahoo! Auctions
- Auction or fixed-price (定額); an optional 即決価格 ends it the moment someone bids at or above it
- +5 minutes whenever the price rises in the final 5 minutes, repeating until it stops
- Questions are private until the seller answers, then public. The seller decides whether to reply; you cannot edit or delete
- Photo-ID verification can be required at bidding time, taking hours to days
- 海外発送 and 返品 are displayed fields — usually 対応しません
Mercari
- Fixed price plus a 値下げ依頼 (price-drop request) button; accepted requests expire after 24 hours
- An auction format ending in the 20:00 hour the day after the first bid; late bids extend it, and bids cannot be withdrawn
- Comments sit on the item page; the guide says replying is not an obligation
- Anonymous shipping is standard on メルカリ便; shipping an item overseas is a listed prohibited act
- Access from outside Japan is restricted; overseas buyers go through 海外取引サポート partners who buy and receive in Japan
Big parts: the size ceiling is in the shipping line
A seller who writes ヤマト or ゆうパック has told you the maximum size of the box, whether they meant to or not. Above those lines a part moves to a bulky-goods lane or becomes 引き取り限定.

The step that only runs in Japanese
Bidding is not the hard part. Three things in this process run in Japanese only, and each is where a used part is actually judged.
The question box. 出品者への質問 on Yahoo, the comment thread on Mercari. This is where you learn whether 傷 means a crack, which part is 欠品, and whether the 動作未確認 gauge has ever been powered up. Yahoo keeps your question private until the seller answers — and the seller may simply not.
The post-win thread. On Yahoo the 取引ナビ carries the address, the delivery method and the 受け取り連絡 that releases the seller’s money; on Mercari it is the 取引メッセージ. A seller whose buyer goes quiet relists.
The bulky leg. Anything past 200 cm is a phone call to book a らくらく家財宅急便 collection at the seller’s address, on the seller’s day.

- 動作確認はされましたか？ — has it been tested, and how?
- 3辺合計と重量を教えてください — 3-side total and weight, so the shipping lane is knowable
- 梱包の有無 — packed or bare? Yahoo's own help expects a seller to state this for a handover
- 業者の集荷でも可能ですか？ — for 引き取り限定, will a booked crew be accepted?
The six condition words are the same on both sites and the shipping lines quote the same two carriers. What changes is who can ask the follow-up question. If you are coming over for a matsuri anyway — the event calendar has the dates — a collection-only lot near the circuit you are visiting is sometimes the cheapest part in Japan, and the seller will still want that question in Japanese.

Can I buy car parts on Mercari Japan from overseas?
Not directly, as of 4 September 2026. Mercari's account-restriction help page says the service restricts access from outside Japan and that a warning may clear once you connect from a domestic line, and its prohibited-acts page lists shipping an item overseas (海外へ商品を配送すること) as a banned act. Mercari's own answer for overseas buyers is 海外取引サポート: Mercari, or a cross-border operator officially partnered with it, buys the item and the seller ships it to a designated address inside Japan. Whichever route you take, the comment box, the 値下げ依頼 (price-drop request) button and the shipping arrangements all run in Japanese.
What is the difference between 着払い and 送料込み on a Japanese parts listing?
送料込み (Mercari) or 出品者負担 (Yahoo! Auctions) means the shipping cost is inside the price. 着払い means you pay the carrier when the parcel arrives: Mercari's help page describes it as the buyer paying the delivery company on receipt, and Yahoo's shipping-settings page says that once a seller selects 着払い, every delivery method on that listing becomes pay-on-delivery. The figure is only knowable if the seller states the size.
