Used JDM Exhaust from Japan: Shipping Limits and Costs (2026)
The Rundown
- EMS caps a parcel at 1.5 m long and 30 kg (1.05 m and 20 kg to Australia; 1.05 m to Germany). A 10 kg EMS box costs ¥27,100 to the USA and ¥23,500 to Europe, Canada or Oceania on Japan Post's table read on 26 Sep 2026.
- Buyee names mufflers as an item that needs its Special Packaging Service: a one-time ¥2,500 per package that Buyee applies, not an option you choose.
- Buyee's own sample for a muffler packed to 2,300 x 350 x 350 mm is ¥23,558 to Asia, ¥41,630 to North America and ¥165,995 to Europe, packaging fee included.
- Used mufflers are on Buyee's list of items that cannot go by FedEx, packages over 30 kg or 1.5 m go by DHL, and ZenMarket states it will not pack a parcel to fit a size or take items apart.
- Aftermarket mufflers for the S13, S14, S15 and 180SX sold on Yahoo! Auctions for a median ¥28,000 across 51 completed sales (10 Jun to 26 Sep 2026), part only.

A used exhaust out of Japan, in numbers
Yes, you can ship a used JDM exhaust out of Japan, and the price turns on one number: its packed length. Boxed at 1.5 m or less and 30 kg or less, it can go by EMS, where a 10 kg box costs ¥27,100 to the USA and ¥23,500 to Europe, Canada or Oceania. Longer than that, it becomes a large package: Buyee’s published sample for a muffler packed to 2.3 m is ¥41,630 to North America and ¥165,995 to Europe. Every figure below was checked on the official pages on 26 September 2026.
An exhaust is the awkward middle child of drift parts. It is too light to be heavy freight like a gearbox or diff, and too long and thin to behave like a box. Proxies have written specific rules for it, and those rules are worth reading before you bid.
Will an exhaust fit in an EMS parcel?
Japan Post’s EMS limits are set per country. For the places most of our readers live:
| Destination | Max length | Length + girth | Max weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| USA | 1.5 m | 2.75 m | 30 kg |
| United Kingdom | 1.5 m | 3 m | 30 kg |
| Canada | 1.5 m | 3 m | 30 kg |
| Australia | 1.05 m | 3 m | 20 kg |
| Germany | 1.05 m | 2 m | 30 kg |
Girth is the distance around the box. A rear section boxed at 1.4 m x 30 cm x 30 cm has a girth of 1.2 m, so length plus girth is 2.6 m: inside the US limit, with little to spare. Buyee’s standard size for a packed muffler is 2,300 x 350 x 350 mm, which is 3.7 m length plus girth and over every EMS limit above. Japan Post’s International Parcel service tops out at 30 kg too, with size standards that vary by country.
If it fits, EMS is the cheapest tracked route. Rates from Japan Post’s official table (zones 3 and 4 include the special additional surcharge):
| Box weight | Zone 3: Oceania, Canada, Mexico, Middle East, Europe | Zone 4: USA | Zone 1: China, Korea, Taiwan |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 kg | ¥13,000 | ¥15,100 | ¥6,400 |
| 10 kg | ¥23,500 | ¥27,100 | ¥10,600 |
| 15 kg | ¥34,000 | ¥39,100 | ¥14,600 |
| 20 kg | ¥44,500 | ¥51,100 | ¥18,600 |

What do proxies do with a long exhaust?
Buyee is unusually direct about exhausts. Its Special Packaging page lists “Car Tires, Bumpers, and Mufflers” first among items that require the service, at a one-time ¥2,500 per package. Buyee decides whether it applies; you do not opt in or out. Items over 20 kg, over 1.5 m on one side, or over 3 m length plus girth are shipped as very large packages, and Buyee says that fee can be “very expensive compared to EMS.”
It also publishes what that costs for a muffler packed to 2,300 x 350 x 350 mm:
| Destination | Buyee sample fee (packaging included) |
|---|---|
| Asia | ¥23,558 |
| North America | ¥41,630 |
| Europe | ¥165,995 |
Two more lines in Buyee’s rules matter. “Used mufflers” are on its list of items that cannot go by FedEx, and packages over 30 kg, 1.5 m or 3 m go by DHL.
ZenMarket takes a different line. Its FAQ says to use FedEx, UPS or DHL when a parcel is “too heavy or too long for EMS”, and among the requests it cannot accept it lists “packing parcels to fit a specific size or weight” and anything needing special skills, “such as disassembling devices.” So a warehouse will not unbolt your cat-back at the mid-pipe flange to get under 1.5 m.
What does the whole thing cost?
| Route | What you pay (published figures) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Self-serve, fits EMS | Part price + Buyee’s ¥500 purchase fee and ¥0 to ¥500 plan (ZenMarket: ¥800 per auction item) + seller’s domestic shipping + Buyee’s ¥2,500 special packaging where applied + EMS (for example ¥27,100 for 10 kg to the USA) | Cheapest route. Domestic shipping is set by the seller and is TBC per listing |
| Self-serve, too long for EMS | Same fees, then Buyee’s large-package route: sample ¥41,630 to North America, ¥165,995 to Europe for a 2.3 m muffler | The sample is a guide. Your fee is set on actual size and weight |
| Packaged through our desk | Actual cost plus our handling fee, with the landed total quoted first | We buy, check, split at the flanges where the design allows, pack and ship |
For scale, here is what the part itself sells for. These are completed Yahoo! Auctions sales in the aftermarket muffler category (社外品), read on 26 September 2026:
| Chassis | Completed sales | Median | Middle half |
|---|---|---|---|
| S13, S14, S15, 180SX | 51 (10 Jun to 26 Sep 2026) | ¥28,000 ($175) | ¥15,000 to ¥46,501 |
| JZX100 | 25 (18 Jul to 25 Sep 2026) | ¥39,800 ($249) | ¥20,000 to ¥62,500 |
Dollars at ¥160 to $1. On a ¥28,000 exhaust, a large-package fee to Europe can cost several times the part. Pack length is the lever.
What should you ask about a used exhaust’s condition?
Listing photos show a clean tip. What decides whether a used exhaust is worth the freight is elsewhere:
Ask the seller before you bid
- Flanges: flat, not warped, studs and bolt holes intact
- Welds: no cracks at the joins, hanger brackets and tip
- Hangers: all present, rubber mounts included or not
- Silencer: does it rattle when shaken (loose baffle or blown packing)
- Overall length, and whether it splits into sections
Worn packing matters beyond comfort. Japanese circuits run noise checks, and some are strict: see noise limits and tech rules at Japanese drift tracks before you buy a “loud” straight-through, and check each venue in the tracks directory. Listing terms such as ジャンク (junk) and 現状渡し (sold as is) change what you can claim later, so read our Yahoo! Auctions listing decoder too.
The one step you cannot do from abroad
Some of the best exhausts never ship at all. In the Yahoo! Auctions sales above, three titles said 直接引き取りのみ, 直接引き渡しのみ or 手渡しのみ: pickup only, handed over in person. One JZX100 dual system that sold for ¥100,000 was one of them. A proxy works by receiving parcels at its warehouse, so a listing that never posts a parcel is out of reach, however good the part is. The step that is missing is someone in Japan who turns up, collects it and takes it from there.
That pickup is the step we take on
We collect pickup-only exhausts from the seller in Japan, check them before you commit and send you a photo and video walkthrough of the flanges, welds, hangers and silencer rattle. Then we split the system at its flanges where the design allows, pack it for the shortest box and quote the landed total before anything is paid. Send us the listing link and your destination city for a landed quote.
The short version
A used exhaust ships fine when the box is 1.5 m or less: EMS is ¥23,500 to ¥27,100 for 10 kg to the West. A full-length system usually is not, and Buyee’s sample puts a packed 2.3 m muffler at ¥41,630 to North America and ¥165,995 to Europe. Get the packed length and the condition answers before you bid. If you are also buying aero or seats, the oversized parts guide covers volumetric weight and crates.
Frequently asked questions
Can I ship a used JDM exhaust from Japan by EMS?
Yes, if the boxed exhaust is no longer than 1.5 m, fits the length-plus-girth limit (3 m for most countries, 2.75 m for the USA) and weighs 30 kg or less, as of 26 Sept 2026 on Japan Post's EMS limits page. Australia and Germany cap length at 1.05 m, and Australia caps weight at 20 kg. A full system usually packs longer than that: Buyee's standard size for a packed muffler is 2,300 mm, so it moves by a courier or special large-package route instead of EMS.
How much does it cost to ship a used exhaust from Japan?
As of 26 Sept 2026, a 10 kg EMS parcel costs ¥27,100 to the USA and ¥23,500 to Europe, Canada and Oceania, and a 15 kg parcel costs ¥39,100 and ¥34,000, from Japan Post's official EMS rate table. When the exhaust is too long for EMS, Buyee publishes a sample for a muffler packed to 2,300 x 350 x 350 mm: ¥23,558 to Asia, ¥41,630 to North America and ¥165,995 to Europe, including its ¥2,500 Special Packaging fee. Add the item price, the proxy's fee and the seller's domestic shipping.
Do I need to check a used exhaust before I buy it from Japan?
Yes. Cracked welds, warped or rusted flanges, broken hangers and worn silencer packing rarely show in listing photos, and worn packing makes an exhaust louder, which matters at Japanese circuits with noise limits as low as 97 dB. As of 26 Sept 2026 ZenMarket sells a 3-photo check for ¥500 per item. TSUISO can check the exhaust in Japan and send a photo and video walkthrough of flanges, welds, hangers and silencer rattle before you decide.
