The Rundown

  • Our full census of Goo-net retail listings on 21 October 2026 found 75 FD3S RX-7s for sale in Japan. 58 showed a price; 17 were listed as price on request and are left out.
  • The 58 priced FDs asked a median of ¥6,734,000 (about $42,100 at ¥160 to the dollar). The cheapest asked ¥4,080,000, the dearest ¥12,800,000, and the middle half sat between ¥5.99M and ¥7.39M.
  • Mazda built the FD3S from October 1991 to August 2002, so the youngest FD reaches the US 25-year mark in August 2027. 52 of the 58 priced cars carry a listed year of 2001 or earlier.
  • Canada's 15-year rule, read on Transport Canada's page on 30 October 2026, has covered every FD3S for years.
  • 10 of the 58 priced listing titles mention an engine overhaul or a rebuilt engine, and 5 mention a compression test. The limited editions mostly hide behind 'ASK': 5 of the 6 Bathurst R listings and the only Spirit R had no price.

A Mazda RX-7 FD3S costs a median of ¥6,734,000 (about $42,100) at Japanese dealer retail. That is the middle of 58 priced FDs in our full census of Goo-net retail listings on 21 October 2026, which ran from ¥4,080,000 to ¥12,800,000. It is the asking price in Japan before shipping and import costs, and it is the ceiling of the market, not the floor. The import rules below were read on the official US and Canadian pages on 30 October 2026.

If you have spent an evening scrolling FD adverts, you know the two things that make it hard: a quarter of the interesting cars say “price on request”, and nobody tells you what it costs to get one out of Japan. This guide covers both.

How much is an FD3S RX-7 in Japan right now?

We counted every FD3S listing on Goo-net’s FD3S type-code page, not just page one. 75 cars were for sale. 58 showed a body price. The other 17 were price on request, so they are not in the numbers. Here is how the 58 spread out.

Asking price (body only)CarsRoughly in US dollars
Under ¥5,000,0004under $31,300
¥5,000,000 to ¥5,999,99912$31,300 to $37,500
¥6,000,000 to ¥6,999,99924$37,500 to $43,700
¥7,000,000 to ¥7,999,99911$43,700 to $50,000
¥8,000,000 to ¥9,999,9996$50,000 to $62,500
¥10,000,000 and over1the ¥12.8M car, about $80,000

Dollar figures use ¥160 to the dollar. Two out of every five priced FDs sit in the ¥6M band, and the middle half of the market runs from ¥5.99M to ¥7.39M. The listed years run from 1992 to 2003. On 5 October 2026 our separate count found 63 priced FDs at a ¥6,630,000 median, so the retail level has held steady through the month. The month-by-month figures, next to the Supra, GT-R and the rest, are on our iconic JDM car prices page.

The cars you most want have no price

Of 6 Bathurst R listings in the census, 5 were price on request (the one priced car asked ¥6,950,000). The only Spirit R listed, a Type A, had no price either. If you want a limited edition, retail will not even tell you the number.

What sits below the retail price?

Retail is a dealer’s price: a car bought at auction or trade-in, reconditioned, given a warranty you cannot use from abroad, and marked up. Most FDs in Japan change hands somewhere underneath that.

Where the car comes fromWhat you payWhat you get
Retail on Goo-net¥4.08M to ¥12.8M, median ¥6.73M (census of 21 Oct 2026)Dealer prep and a public asking price, plus 17 cars with no price at all
Japanese trade auction or drift-community private saleBelow retail: the actual cost of the car plus our fee, with the total quoted up front before anything is boughtNo showroom prep. An auction sheet grade, or the car as its owner kept it

We do not put a figure on “below retail”, because it depends on the car in front of us that week. What we can promise is that you see one total before you commit.

What should you know about a rotary FD before you buy?

The FD3S runs Mazda’s 13B-REW, a twin-rotor rotary with a sequential twin-turbo system: one turbo works low in the rev range and the second joins higher up. It was a complex system when new. A few points are known across the FD world, and the census shows them in the adverts themselves.

  • Compression and apex seals. A rotary’s health is read as compression per rotor face, and worn apex seals show up as low or uneven readings. Japanese sellers sometimes print the numbers in the title. Two cars in our census do: one lists front 8.4 / 8.7 / 8.5 and rear 8.9 / 8.8 / 8.8, another front 840 / 760 / 770 and rear 840 / 830 / 860. 5 of the 58 priced titles mention a compression test, and 10 mention an engine overhaul or a rebuilt engine.
  • Sequential twin-turbo or single. The original system relies on a lot of vacuum hoses and solenoids, and many FDs have been converted. 5 priced titles mention a single-turbo setup such as a T04Z, and the most expensive car, at ¥12.8M, says its sequential twins were changed to run as permanent twins. Neither is wrong. Know which one you are buying and whether it was done properly.
  • Body and history. These cars are 24 to 35 years old. Rust and old accident repairs are worth checking under any FD, and a drift-used car will also carry clip damage in the rear quarters and bumper areas. Mismatched paint and hacked-in wiring for an aftermarket ECU are the usual tells.

You cannot judge any of this from listing photos, and you do not have to fly over to do it. We inspect the car locally in Japan and send you a video and photo walk-through: the underside, the frame rails, the engine bay and a cold start. If the seller or the auction house provides a compression reading, we film or photograph it too. You decide after you have seen it. If the car is at auction, our guide to reading a Japanese auction sheet explains the grades you will see on the sheet.

Many retail FDs carry an A’PEXi Power FC in the listing. If you are pricing one separately, our used Power FC guide found a median of ¥57,300 across 20 used FD3S 13B-REW units on Yahoo! Auctions Japan (checked 9 October 2026). For new bodywork, ORIGIN Labo. makes FD fenders and wings; see the ORIGIN Labo. FD3S range.

Can you import an FD3S to the US or Canada?

United States. CBP’s importing page, read on 30 October 2026, says that as a general rule motor vehicles less than 25 years old must comply with all US safety standards. The age runs from when the car was built, and Mazda built the FD3S from October 1991 to August 2002. As of 30 October 2026, cars built up to October 2001 are old enough; the very last FDs get there in August 2027. In our census, 52 of the 58 priced cars carry a listed year of 2001 or earlier, but a late-2001 car may still be a few weeks short, so the build plate on that specific car is what counts. The EPA side is separate: EPA’s page says its provision for vehicles over 21 years old expects an engine identical to the original. A rotary swapped for a piston engine needs a closer look before it ships. Our 25-year rule guide covers the month-by-month counting.

Canada. Transport Canada says vehicles older than 15 years are not regulated at import under the Motor Vehicle Safety Act, with age set by the month and year of manufacture. Every FD3S passed 15 years by August 2017.

How do you actually buy an FD from Japan if you live abroad?

The whole route, from deposit to your port, is in our step-by-step import process guide. For an FD it looks like this:

1
Pick the specOriginal twin-turbo, rebuilt engine or single-turbo; manual or auto; any limited edition you would accept.
2
Find the carRetail listings, the trade auction halls, or a private sale in the drift community.
3
Inspect it in JapanUnderside, frame, engine bay and a cold start, on video, before money moves.
4
Export deregistrationThe Japanese registry paperwork, done in Japan.
5
Ship and clearRo-Ro or container, then HS-7 and EPA 3520-1 in the US, or Transport Canada's process.

Two of those steps are where foreign buyers get stuck. Export deregistration usually wants the owner’s registered seal and seal certificate, which only Japanese residents can get; our export deregistration guide explains why. And step 2 has a locked door: the trade auction halls, where most FDs change hands below retail, do not admit private overseas buyers, because membership needs a Japanese business and guarantors. You cannot bid there from abroad.

That is the step we take for you

We have the auction access and we know the drift-community sellers. Have us find an FD3S at the Japanese trade auctions and send you the walk-through video before you commit. Tell us the spec you want and the compromises you will accept; we send you candidates, underside and cold-start footage, and one total in a quote before anything is bought.

If you want to see an FD sliding before you choose one, there was exactly one FD3S in the 2026 D1 Grand Prix and D1 Lights rankings when we counted the D1 grid on 21 September 2026. D1 dates and the grassroots days we track are on our drift calendar.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a Mazda RX-7 FD3S cost in Japan in 2026?

At Japanese dealer retail, an FD3S RX-7 asked a median of ¥6,734,000 (about $42,100 at ¥160 to the dollar) in TSUISO's full census of Goo-net listings on 21 October 2026. That count covered 58 priced cars, from ¥4,080,000 to ¥12,800,000, with the middle half between ¥5.99M and ¥7.39M. Another 17 FDs were listed as price on request. These are asking prices before export costs; cars bought through Japanese trade auctions or private sales come in below retail, at a cost that depends on the individual car.

Can I import an FD3S RX-7 to the United States?

Most of them, yes. US Customs and Border Protection states that vehicles less than 25 years old must comply with all US safety standards, so an FD3S becomes eligible under the 25-year exemption once it is 25 years old by its build date. Mazda built the FD3S from October 1991 to August 2002, so as of 30 October 2026 cars built up to October 2001 qualify and the last ones qualify in August 2027. Check the build date on the specific car, not just the year in the advert.

Can I import an FD3S RX-7 to Canada?

Yes. Transport Canada's page, read on 30 October 2026, says vehicles older than 15 years are not regulated at import by the Motor Vehicle Safety Act, with age set by the month and year of manufacture. The newest FD3S was built in August 2002, so every FD3S passed the 15-year mark by August 2017. Provincial registration and inspection rules still apply after the car lands.
